Preventive Dentistry

Preventive measures are the best way to keep your teeth and gums healthy. We strongly recommend dental visits every 6 months so we can help you keep your teeth tarter free and your gums disease free. During routine visits we are also able to detect problems early before they have a chance to cause you pain and significant damage. Our exams also include oral cancer screening which when caught early is highly treatable. We do everything possible to help our dental friends keep their natural teeth – hopefully for a lifetime.

General Dentistry

There is nothing worse then a nagging toothache; you don’t feel like talking, smiling or eating. At Prairie Street Family Dentistry, we offer the services you need to get you out of pain and back to your life. Whether it is a filling for a cavity, a crown for a broken or weak tooth, an extraction, gum disease treatment or a root canal, you can trust Dr. Lovan and his team to provide quality care with a gentle touch.

Periodontal Therapy

Did you know that the health of your gums could have a direct effect on your overall health?

Recent studies have shown an association between gum disease and increased risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and diabetes. The leading cause of gum disease is the build-up of plaque on your teeth. With regular cleanings we can remove the tarter build-up before it causes gum irritation and disease. During routine visits we carefully screen for any signs of gum disease because if caught early gum disease is easily treatable and reversible. We also provide education on proper at home oral hygiene so you can be an active participant in keeping your teeth and gums healthy.

Dr. Lovan and the hygiene team have also received advanced training in the use of a soft tissue laser to treat gum disease quite painlessly.

Snore/ Sleep Apnea Appliances

The Effective Alternative to CPAP Therapy:

Mandibular Repositioning Appliances (MRA’s) are oral appliances that treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. They are small devices, worn in the mouth, similar to orthodontic retainers or sports mouth-guards. MRA’s are worn during sleep to prevent the collapse of the tongue and soft tissues in the back of the throat so that the airway remains open during sleep. The appliances promote adequate air intake and help to provide normal sleep in people who snore.

Do you feel tired during the day even though you seemed to sleep through the night? Is your partner about ready to throw you out of bed because you are keeping them awake?

With a custom fitted appliance, Dr. Lovan can help you and everyone else in your house get a restful night’s sleep.

Both snoring and sleep apnea can disrupt your sleep and prevent you from getting the rest your body needs. A custom fitted oral appliance will help reduce the effects of sleep apnea and snoring allowing you to get a restful night’s sleep.

Worn in the mouth like an orthodontic appliance during sleep, oral appliances keep the soft tissue from collapsing and interrupting normal breathing patterns. The purpose of the oral appliance may be to reposition the lower jaw, tongue, soft palate, and hyoid bone into a certain position, to keep the airway open with stabilization of the tongue and jaw, or to provide artificial muscle tone to prevent collapse and resulting airway blockage.

Dr. Lovan will fit your oral appliance for comfort by using a mold of your mouth to design your unique fit.

Dental Services for Children

It is the goal of Prairie Street Family Dentistry to help all children feel very comfortable at the dentist’s office, and to form life-long bonds instead of fear.

Beginning at the age of two or three, we ask that you bring your children to your regular check-up and cleaning so they can watch and see what happens during a normal visit. If they are feeling comfortable enough we can schedule a visit for them right after yours. Our hygienists are very sensitive to the needs of children and will take it slow, moving at a pace that your child is comfortable with.

Mouth Guards

Protecting teeth is much easier and less costly then repairing or replacing them after a traumatic injury. Mouth guards are an excellent way to protect your child’s teeth from injury due to teeth grinding and during sports. The guard usually covers the upper teeth; however, if your child wears braces or another fixed dental appliance on his lower jaw, Dr. Lovan may suggest a mouth protector for these teeth, too. Mouth guards are custom fitted so they are comfortable and easy to wear.

Dental Sealants

Today we have better diet, oral hygiene habits, fluoride and dental sealants to thank for the reduced amount of cavities in children.

Dental sealants are applied to teeth, especially molars with large crevices where bacteria can accumulate and cause cavities. The sealant fills in the crevices forming a barrier to protect the tooth surface.

TMJ

There are many factors that can cause TMJ disorders and many treatments available. Dr. Lovan will examine your bite (how your teeth fit together), your muscles, and your jaw joint to determine if there is a problem and the best way to correct it. Based on your needs he will determine what treatment would work best for you. Symptoms of TMJ disorders may include clicking, popping and locking of the jaw and pain when you chew or open your mouth wide. Various ailments such as migraine headaches, neck and shoulder pain, dizziness, and ringing in the ears have also been linked to TMJ disorders. Please let us know if you have been experiencing any of these problems at your next appointment. As with many dental issues, the early TMJ disorders are diagnosed the easier they are to treat.

Full and Partial Dentures

If you are missing teeth you run the risk of creating other oral problems such as teeth shifting which can throw your bite off and the inability to chew properly. Dentures can take the place of missing natural teeth. Dentures allow you to chew and speak more easily and can improve your appearance. Full dentures are used when all of a patient’s teeth need to be replaced.

Clasped Partial Partial dentures are used when only a few teeth are missing. In either case, dentures can help you look and feel your best. With custom fitted dentures we work very hard to make sure you have the best fit for comfort and function.

Dental Implants

If you are missing one or more teeth, dental implants may be the perfect solution for you.

Dental implants are replacement teeth that look like and can be cared for like your original teeth. Dental Implants can also be used to secure dentures. In the not so distant past constant denture relining and shifting, dietary restrictions and jaw shrinkage was what many people with missing teeth had to look forward to. For our patients who want to avoid these problems, we believe implants are the best dentistry has to offer. Dental implants can restore complete functionality and natural beauty.

Implants are secured with an amazingly strong titanium post that can last 25 years or more. They don’t interfere with speech, eating or comfort. Recent advancements make implants easier and more affordable than ever.

When you are missing teeth, the jawbone weakens and recedes. Implants act like a tooth root, keeping your jaw strong and youthful looking.
